A 10 year old boy visiting a show said, "How do you make them alive?"
A Native American said, "You have the wind in your work".
Moana Ponder expresses her artistic vision in classic fine art bronze with emphasis on the figure. Raised in a family of artists, she learned the language of visual art from childhood. From an early age she was attracted to dance. So she took naturally to the idea of combining her art with her love of dance to produce work that is elegant and alive while at the same time conveying a message to the heart.
Much of her work is centered on her love of the environment. The sea, wind and mountains or even butterflies have all served as themes around which classic pieces are based. Additional work springs from an inner landscape, one of the mind. Some of these pieces are introspective while others reach out to the infinite. Whatever the subject, there is attention to lyrical line and a rhythmic movement that pleases the eye.
Born in Hawaii, she was educated at Punahou and then the University of California at Berkeley. Specific study was under John McMahon, Edy Burke, Fritz White and others as well as study at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Time spent in Italy and France also influenced her work.
Originally a watercolorist, she took up sculpture in 1995 and enjoyed a rapid rise to national attention. By 2002 her work was exhibited by the National Sculpture Society. Today her work is in galleries from coast to coast and is appreciated by many discerning private and corporate collectors.
