Cherishing the Sea   19 x 6 x 10  $5500
Picture
 Also available in alternate patina

Anyone who has been raised near the sea will have developed a lifelong bond with the ocean.  It’s a source of so much we need and appreciate.  Food and other resources, beauty and refreshment are just a few of the many benefits of the oceans.  It is sad to see these wonderful gifts wasted, neglected or abused. The English word cherish comes closest in meaning to the Hawaiian word “malama” which means to take care of but with a warmth of feeling beyond simply caring for a task or duty.  This piece references the fishing nets which can be positive if not carried to an extreme.  Also the turtle and fish represent all the sea creatures and the kelp and coral stand for the other systems within the ocean that support life. One hand of the figure expresses care and the other protection and respect for the sea.
