Some years ago, the physician associated with an orphanage noticed that the baby in the end bed always did well. While the children would come and go, still the little one who was in the end bed thrived even when others became sick or in some cases even died. He was at a loss to figure why. They all received the same diet and care. Thus, he decided to hide in the nursery overnight to see if there was another factor he had missed. He saw that the cleaning lady who scrubbed the floors at night would stand up and stretch when she had finished with the floor, then she reached for the baby in the end bed and picked it up, cuddled it and talked to it and then gently put it back to bed. So the missing ingredient was love.
In this piece, a baby is held and welcomed by it’s grandmother. But she isn’t just loving the new child. She is teaching the toddler with her that it isn’t enough to just receive love, we must learn to give it too.
