Outdoor sculpture is the ultimate finishing touch to any architectural project. Whether it is a home, or a commercial or public project, all are enhanced by a well chosen piece of sculpture. When the choice involves bronze, there are a few factors to consider. One is scale. Will the scale of the piece harmonize with the environment into which it will be installed? Durability is another issue, so the patina and maintenance must work in the outdoor setting. And lastly, cost will include the actual cost of the piece as well as shipping and installation.
In this day of technological advances, the issue of scale has become much easier to accommodate. All large pieces begin with a small model called a macquette, then it is enlarged to the desired size. A unique piece can be commissioned or a smaller piece in the artist's oeuvre can be used. The tabletop size piece or new macquette can now be digitally enlarged easily to provide the sculptor with a foam replica in the desired size with a huge saving of labor. This is then coated with a finish coat of clay which is sculpted by the artist to give the piece the same definition as the original art. A mold is then made and the piece is cast in bronze.
From the standpoint of durability, classic patinas of French Brown or Verdigris are popular as well as black or gray. Custom colors are possible. A piece is maintained by a regular schedule of waxing. And fountains benefit from the use of water without a high mineral content.
As these points are taken into account, the resulting bronze will delight it's viewers for many years to come.
